This small yet charming restaurant with a great authentic
atmosphere is located in an old 16th century building in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris and serves North African cuisine with the
emphasis on couscous and tajine and is run by the same people that run the Andy Wahloo bar next door.
Although there is the main dining room, there is also a balcony or mezzanine that looks
over the main area and what is cooking on the open stove and this only has two low tables
that you reach by a tiny, ancient staircase with light flickering from lanterns on each
step.
This little restaurant in Paris is often
frequented by celebrities who enjoy the spicy Moroccan cuisine and the cosy ambience, yet
it is a friendly place where everyone is treated the same, famous or not. However,
it is a good idea to make a reservation and if possible, ask for the loft area that will
make the evening an even more special night to remember.
On a Saturday and Sunday the 404 Restaurant provide a brunch that can include items such
as couscous with grilled skewers and sausages, but the other speciality served here are
the tagines, which are basically complex and intricately spiced stews. Meat dishes
like duck, lamb and beef are cooked on an open flame in earthenware pots and served
exceedingly hot where the meat just falls off the bone, but they also do a vegetarian
alternative with seven vegetables. Other items on offer include cucumber in yoghurt
sauce, grilled meats, potato pastries, chicken with lemon and olives and fruit salad in
rose water.
There is also a great selection of Moroccan wine, mint tea and beer on offer, and what a
lot of people do, is go next door to the unusual Andy Wahloo bar and nightclub after their meal to enjoy
the complete North African experience for the rest of the evening with a few mojito
cocktails.
