Franche-Comte Province of France

The history of the Franche-Comte will also surprise you with its quaint villages right through to towns steeped in history, the many castles, monumental buildings and the contrasting simple architecture from the villages will keep you enthralled while you travel around.

The vast woodland of the Franche-Comte region stretches between Vosges and Jura, but the less obvious are the thousands of underground passages and caves you can explore.

Franche-Comte has some well known places of interest and can usually be visited very easily, even when it comes to experiencing the splendours of places like the Herisson Waterfall, La Motte viewpoint, Saut de la Truite Waterfall, and the gorges of the Langouette.

If you are into adventure holidays and water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, water skiing or even just plain old swimming, then you will love the fact that Franche-Comte has around 60 lakes, which are an irresistible attraction.

There are also 5,500km of streams, rivers and waterways, and around 320km of these are navigable by canoe, kayaking or via river cruises.

And yes, we mentioned waterfalls earlier and this is yet another characteristic of this region.  Almost every river has gorges, drops or waterfalls and to experience the magnificent rush of these in the spring when the snow is melting is just fantastic.
