The coastline is perfect for tourism with its long sandy beaches,
islands and marinas, so it comes as no surprise that this is a very popular holiday
destination with Gites, hotels B&B's and campsites all along the coast.
Like all areas of France, the people of the Poitou-Charentes enjoy their food with
regional highlights including excellent shellfish.
But away from the coast the landscape is quite flat and is used for agriculture and some wine growing, which also makes Poitou-Charentes a
fantastic region for cycling even for the
novice.
Also on offer are vineyards, and yes, who can go to France without tasting the local wines
from the region in which they are staying. But there are also castles, churches and
ramparts for the more historically minded.
We are sure that you have also heard of Cognac,
and yes, this is the region, although technically a commune in the French department of
Charente, where it is produced, so why not even experience some of this whilst visiting
the Poitou-Charente region.
Many of the cognac producers in the town of Cognac and the surrounding area allow its
visitors not just to taste their product but also have guided tours to show visitors how
the cognac is made.
