But yet another aim is to have a site that will provide
activities to suite all tastes, from horse riding to sailing, golfing to swimming and
cycling to fishing, this place has an incredible amount of different outdoor activities
that will be able to provide enjoyment for all that come here.
The Leisure Centre is situated in the municipality of St-Quentin-en-Yvelines, which is
around 30km to the West of Paris and is a strategic
location in a major suburb that allows it to offer a wide range of outdoor leisure
activities to the inhabitants of the whole Parisian region and those that are on holiday
in France within this area.
A national man-made heritage
It is probably most well known as the site that has the largest lake in Ile de France region and at 120 hectares is a classic piece
of infrastructure that acts as a reservoir against flooding and also has a major National
Nature Reserve, which is approximately 90 hectares.
The lake of St-Quentin is the last link in a chain of lakes and streams that was
constructed under the orders of King Louis XIV between 1675 and 1685, which was designed
to collect and bring rainwater to the fountains in the park around his Château of Versailles.
The system devised relies solely on gravity, as the water is transported between
artificial lakes that are closed off by locks, and goes along 34km of aqueducts, with
twenty of these being underground, and the pine trees at the northern end of the lake bear
witness to this amazing feat.
Natural heritage
The lake of St-Quentin en Yvelines is an important landing stage for migrating birds,
which is why it has become a special protection area. The western end of the lake is also
classified as one of only 150 National Nature Reserves in France and there are more than
250 species of birds that can be seen here, which include ducks, marsh warblers and even
the rare crested triton that is a species protected worldwide. There are also eight
species of plant that are also protected and a special feature of this fantastic place.
Well over two million visitors take advantage of this fantastic place in
Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines every year in an area that is not far from the Capital City Paris. It is also at the crossroads
of Versailles, the Bièvre valley and the Chevreuse Valley with its Regional Nature Park,
the Rambouillet Forest, and has provided the Ile de France region with a major asset for
all to enjoy, including the environment.
The Base Régionale de Loisirs de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines is open every day of the year
from 7.30am through to 10.30pm where you have access to the facilities available on this
